Where Can A Dancer Get Work?

This is a question I’m often asked; and I must say over the past 30 years my answer has changed with the industry.

These days dancers need to add as many strings to their bow as possible, being multi skilled is the key to success unless they land a job with one of the few dance companies left in Australia. There are very few work opportunities for a dancer who can only dance compared to 20 years ago.

A dancer of today must be trained in all forms of dance, able to deliver a few lines, mime, have acrobatic skills, act a little, teach, and do promo work to survive in the entertainment industry.

 If a dancer is looking for long term employment look to – Moulin Rouge & Lido in Paris, Cirque Du Soleil, Cruise ships, Musical Theatre, dance and ballet companies for full time employment.

The other alternative is be creative, develop your own dance company and show then produce your own show…. Become the entrepreneur.
