How to get an agent

07 Jun 16

What is the benefit of listing with a talent agency? The answer is simple, if you want to increase your opportunity of getting work then list with an agency. The Agent not only fields all offers of work but also protects talent from shady deals.

It’s essential to join a reputable Agency, one who builds a good relationship with the talent based on mutual trust and respect. This can be richly rewarding for both parties. Artists represented by an Agent enjoy excellent working conditions, because the Agent negotiates the work taking all worry out of it for the talent, passing onto the performer all relevant information for the performance e.g. performance detail, rest breaks, payment details, call times, costume detail and ensures the work place is compliant with health and safety legislation.

Most agencies will list a multitude of talent, shows and assorted entertainments. The unrepresented performer accepting bookings directly from a club or venue, may not enjoy some of the working conditions talent represented by an agency does, it’s very difficult to sell yourself, negotiating the correct rate of pay and conditions.

Freelance performers often work for less money in substandard conditions which ultimately undermine the industry they are working in.

When joining an Agency it is important to understand the working arrangement.

* Your minimum working time will be a 3 hour call, any additional time worked over the 3 hours will be in increments of 1 hour

* Rates of pay are in line with the award

* All workcover and superannuation fees (if applicable) are paid by the employer

* Tax is deducted at the rate indicated on your Tax Declaration

* Payment is made upon the Agency receiving payment from the Client
